Tomintoul village was planned and built in 1776 by the 4th Duke of Gordon. The Duke's plan can still be seen today in the wide main street and attractive tree-lined central square, with its memorial fountain.

Located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul is the highest village in the Highlands, at a height of around 1170 ft. (356m). Tomintoul lies between two rivers, the River Avon and River Conglass. With a poulation of around 280 Tomintoul village has historically always been a resting place for travellers.
